Coach Matt's Corner: Tips for High School Soccer Tryouts

Soccer Tryouts are fast approaching for the public high schools in Texas. November is the month when most coaches select team players for the varsity and Junior varsity squads.

Here are some tips for players and parents to be aware and prepared to meet the challenging tryout session.

  1. Elite Mind Set. Soccer is a mental game. Having a positive and confident mind set in performing the core techniques such as dribbling, first touch receiving, passing, and finishing play a huge role They are tested under pressure. In addition, players need to consider the mental side of each technique as well. For example, the first touch at elite playing level means super control of the ball, preparing to have purposeful options before the ball reaches the limbs, and execution of the correct technique at any given moment.

  2. Exhibit Multi Skills. Skills differ from techniques. Skills are execution of when and where each technique should work. This player decision should benefit the team he is playing at any given phase of the match. A fine example would be #9 striker finishing on target successfully at the earliest opportunity before the defending pressure comes is considered an elite performer. Therefore, players at tryouts have to show wide array of skill sets.

  3. Techniques with Soccer IQ. One identifiable criterion for selection is comfort with the ball. This means player needs to receive and pass the ball under pressure without panic. One measure of technical precision is having to execute with both feet, all surfaces in tight spaces. Soccer IQ basically means player awareness to see teammates and opponents before the ball arrives. During tryouts, player needs to show an understanding of pressure and spaces, this vital criterion is related to decision making process which includes when and where to take risks and to be safe.

  4. Your Unique Positional Role. In some cases, you as a player needs to stand out playing multiple positions unique to your style of play. A simple example is when tactical small-sided games are utilized for selection, be sure you stand out to make transition from attack to defense and vice versa. Finally demonstrate your unique touch in scoring, recovering ability from a mistake, making space for all teammates will all add extra dimension to the final tryout process. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
